Thirteen

Bricktown was buzzing with a friendly and cheerful crowd. Christmas lights sparkled along the canal and businesses, adding a little magic to the ringing in of a new year. Liz walked arm in arm with Josh. They passed in front of the Harkins Theater and stopped by the giant water fountain. Josh pulled his phone out and put his arm around Liz.

“Take a picture with me?” he asked.

Liz leaned in until her cheek brushed his. She looked at their faces on his screen and then at the lens. She never did like the way selfies looked when people stared at themselves instead of the lens.

Josh smiled and snapped the picture. “Best looking couple out here tonight.”

“I don’t know about that.”

“I do.” He winked at her. “Are you wanting to stay until the ball drops?”

“I think I’d rather drive home before too many other people start driving. It makes me nervous how many people drink on New Year’s Eve.”

“We can swing over to HeyDay and get Tyler now if you want.”

“Let him hang out with his friends for another hour. We can walk the canal again, and maybe we can grab an ice cream at Marble Slab.”

“It’s a little cool for ice cream.”

“Nonsense.” Liz chuckled.

They crossed Reno and walked beside the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Staring at the entrance to the park, Liz stopped walking. “When did we stop going to ball games? I keep remembering all of these things we used to do when the boys were younger, when things were easier with them.”

“When they were happy,” he said. “Do you think Tyler is happy?”

Liz clung to Josh. “I have no idea. Are any of us happy right now?”

“Right this minute, I am.” He kissed the top of her head.

“I feel so guilty when I start to feel an inkling of happiness.”

“Do you think that Colby wanted us to be unhappy?”

“Aside from thinking he was a burden to us; I don’t think he thought beyond relieving us of that burden.”

“That’s what my therapist says,” Josh said.

“Mine, too.”

Josh turned to face Liz and waited for her to look at him. It took a moment, but she finally did.

“I didn’t know you were seeing a therapist.”

“I was embarrassed to admit it after fighting against it for so long.”

“What made you decide to try it?”

“Christy said a few things that were really powerful. Martha meets me at the barn and it really helps to be able to brush or pet Dusty while I’m talking to her. Gives me something to focus on other than how broken I feel.”

“I’m proud of you.” Josh drew her into his arms and held her close.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.” She leaned into his embrace, her head rested against his shoulder and she held him tightly.

“Don’t be, I’m just glad you’re talking to someone. We are going to figure out our way through this. I know we won’t ever get over it. I’m trying to drop the idea that things will be normal again.”

“Thank you. That was hurting me every single time you said it.
